It’s happened to all of us at some point.  You set up your laundry, two socks go in, but one comes out. Somewhere in the process, it seems to slip into the void, never to be seen again. Here are some fun and informative points that you may not have heard of.

1.      While washing machines don’t have an appetite for cotton, small items can sometimes get stuck in the drum or seal. In front loading washers, socks can slip into the rubber gasket aroun the door.  More common in household machines.

2.      Static electricity may also be an unlikely culprit, as it can make socks cling to larger items such as sweaters, pillowcases, or bedsheets; and shake loose at a much later time.

3.      Human Error (AKA the Sock Shuffle), means that sometimes they can get lost in transit, or accidentally end up in another family members pile, even more so for socks since many styles look extremely similar at a glance.

4.      Or maybe it’s not the washer after all…  Many folklores and mythologies around the world have legends of garment stealing creatures of the night.  Here’s a few fun examples:

  • The Brownies (Scottish Folklore): Not the dessert item!  These helpful house spirits can turn prankster if offended.
  • Huldrafolk (Norse Tales): Hidden folk who live alongside humans, and tend to borrow small items without exactly remembering to return them.
  • Gremlins (Modern Myth): First popularized in WWII, gremlins were blamed for aircraft mechanical failures, and have evolved in the modern mythos to terrorize households.

Whether it’s static cling, laundry mishaps, or mythological tricksters.  You can always rely on the monsters of Monster Laundry to take great care of your garments.
